Digital Media

First off let see if we can list how many forms of digital media surround us (you should be able to come up with at least 5).

  • Cellphones

  • Digital video

  • Digital Television

  • Internet

  • E-Book

  • Game Systems

  • Compact Disc (CD)

  • Electronic Commerce
What number system is digital data based on? What two digits are used to code all digital data?

The number system that digital data is based on is the Binary Numeral System. The two digits that are used to code all digital data are 0 and 1.

What is a bit? What is a byte?

A bit is a basic unit of information in computing and telecommunications. It is the amount of information that can be stored by a device or other physical systems that can normally exist in only two distinct states.

A Byte is a unit of digital information in computing and telecommunications. It is an ordered collection of bits, in which each bit denotes the binary value of 1 or 0.

What is “sampling rate”? Find an image that explains how sampling works

Typically expressed in samples per second, or hertz (Hz), the rate at which samples of an analog signal are taken in order to be converted into digital form. A PC’s sound card typically will sample a received analog signal, such as through a microphone, and digitize it for use by the computer. A higher sampling rate provides a better quality reproduction than a lower sampling rate

How does Colour Depth (Color Depth) or bit depth effect the appearance of an image? Find some images to illustrate the effect.

Colour Depth or bit depth is a computer graphics term describing the number of bits used to represent the colour of a single pixel in a bitmapped image or video frame buffer.

Colour depth effects both still and video digital media. Sampling rate only effects video but not still media. Can you explain.

Still media doesn't need sampling rate because still media is moving pictures with no sound. Video digital media does have sound so that it means it does need sampling rate. The terms camera, video camera, and camcorder are video digital media.
